Sodium hypochlorite is a product obtained by reacting chlorine with a dilute caustic soda solution. Commonly known as household bleach, it is widely used in homes and industry for cleaning and sanitizing.

This chemical is normally sold as a solution of up to 2.5%, and it is very important that it is diluted correctly, because that is what makes it highly effective against bacteria, viruses, germs and parasites.

Another property of sodium hypochlorite is that it can be used as a bleaching agent, which makes it very useful for removing stains from white clothing.

Some applications

• Water purification: Using at least 4 drops of sodium hypochlorite at a concentration between 2.0% and 2.5% for every 1 liter of water, and letting it act for 30 minutes, purifies water for consumption.

But be careful: Do not drink the water right after adding the product. The water must be boiled after the procedure; only then can it be used for drinking, cooking, washing fruit and vegetables or bathing.

• Sanitizing surfaces: One of its most common uses is disinfecting surfaces to eliminate any viruses and bacteria present where they are used. It can be used on counters, tables, floors, walls and many other areas in homes or businesses.

• Cleaning food: Sanitizing fruit and vegetables with a sodium hypochlorite solution is also very common. The food should be immersed in a mixture of 2.0% to 2.5% product concentration for every 1 liter of water, left to stand for 10 minutes and then rinsed with filtered water.

CAUTION: NEVER MIX CHEMICALS AT HOME.

Careless use of chemicals can have serious health consequences.

In case of contact with doses above those recommended for the product, or accidental ingestion, seek emergency medical care.

When used responsibly, sodium hypochlorite is safe for health and has many benefits, but care should never be overlooked.
